Reflecting on 2018

2018 was a year of learning and accepting change. I pulled my daughter from school in December after much contemplation and tears from both of us. I spent the remainder of the year trying to figure out this homeschool thing. I also decided to keep my son at his Montessori school for kindergarten instead of sending him to the local school in the fall.

Those changes greatly impacted my year. Suddenly, I had zero alone time and was now in charge of educating a little human. I went from brainstorming how to add more clients to my freelance writing business to delving headfirst into the vast world of homeschool curriculum and figuring out which one worked best for my kid.

I also learned how alienating making such a big life change can be- I was judged, lost friends and told I wouldn’t make it as a homeschool parent. But I also made amazing friends and watched my daughter blossom into a wonderful person as we eased into our homeschool routine.

I know there were so many more things that happened last year, but the decision to homeschool my daughter was by far the biggest, overwhelming theme of 2018.

It reminded me we that we can’t always have control over aspect of our lives, and that our worth is determined by how we deal with these unexpected changes. It was by far one of the scariest, yet most rewarding things I’ve done in my life.
I never thought I’d be a homeschooling mom, yet here I am loving it so much that I want to homeschool my son next year, too.

So, make resolutions if you’d like and reach for those goals. Or live life with an open heart and accept all the bumps and changes as they come. Either way…be happy, healthy and kind in the new year.
I wish all of you love, peace and joy for 2019.
